In the autumn of the year 1662, Brother Dennis was expelled from the Abbey at Westminster in England. It was a time of stringent moral codes that were reflected in the strictest allegiance to proper etiquette. A good friar was sober, reverent and gentle. Brother Dennis was none of these!
Brother Dennis loved the Lord and loved life. When he spoke, there was a twinkle in his eye that said, “Don’t take yourself so seriously”. Laughter flowed freely out of him. He loved great food and strong drink, and the more he indulged, the greater was his love of life. It was, however, his humor and irreverence that brought him the scorn of his more conservative brethren. And so he was expelled from the Abbey.
He wandered the width and breadth of England and France, spreading his gospel of loving the Lord and loving life, and in doing so, became something of a folk hero. Soon other monks joined with him. In the summer of 1689, Brother Dennis built the Abbey at Canterbury. Attached to the main building was an Inn with a garden pavilion from which the monks served travelers and local townsfolk food and drink. At the end of each day, the monks would gather here and sing the popular songs of their day in glorious harmony. Hence garnering the name “Harmonious Monks”.
The Abbey prospered for centuries. The monks traversed the globe and returned home with many enjoyable recipes to share with their brethren.
In the winter of 1943, at the height of the Nazi Blitzkrieg, the Abbey was totally demolished, devastated by German bombs. There were no survivors. All that remains are a few of the monks’ journals, their recipes and their legend.
Today, at Harmonious Monks, we honor that legend by reveling in the same great food and drink they enjoyed, singing the tunes of our time, and celebrating life!
